Ring Gear Fractures

The ring gears on this page are off of flying Corvair conversions and had less than 100 hours on them.
Aerolite offers a
solid ring gear that in testing with over 60 hours shows no signs of cracking. While
some ring gears are cracking some are not and that is why it is important you check your ring gear
before each flight. You will need to use a mirror to inspect the gear closely because the cracks are
forming behind the pully and cant be seen from the inlets of the nose bowl. If you have any questions
or if you have a cracked ring gear contact aerolite using our contact form or call me directly @ (502)644-6123

This could be filed and used but it will only crack some where else later.

This is from the same ring gear and was NOT visible due to the pulley hiding it. This is the same fracture we are seeing over and over. I would suggest checking your ring gear before every flight. The FEEL GOOD fix for this is to de bur the webs and sand them smooth, this DOES NOT keep them from cracking but might make it last a while longer.

This ring gear is cracked in 4 different places The piliot said he felt a vibration at 1800 RPM's

Two of the cracks were at the small holes and went into the web

Like the other cracks one is clear across the web and the other is half way across the other web.

It's hard to see from the pics but there is a crack under the numbers half way across.

They are extremly hard to find with the cowling on the plane.

If you look very closely you can see the crack... do that with the cowling on.
