Distributor Issues

The distributor on this page is off a flying Corvair conversions and had less than 100 hours on it.
Aerolite DOES NOT offer a distributor although Aerolite does indorse the distributors built and sold
by Bill Clapp. Aerolite found many of the problems with it's engines to be a direct result of poorly
re built distributors. As a result Aerolite only use's Bill's distributors.
Below is one of the more common problems we have found with the re built distributors but
other problems include missing bushings in the dual bushing distributors, wrong advance numbers
written on the bottom of distributors, and just plain slop in them. If you have issues you feel
might be attributed to your distributor please contact Bill Clapp and he will be glad to asset
you in fixing your problem.

When you let the points open on the cam the point gap is .019 as they should be.

As you can see here the gap is .019

However when you push the shaft the gap increases to .030

While we can't honestly say what effect this has on the timing it was not supposed to have this much
play with the duel bushings. One answer to stopping this might be to line bore the distributor while inside
the rear housing but that is tricky due to the different size holes. I might have come up with a way to do
this but it would require special hones to be made that would attach to a shaft after it is inserted into the
housing and would allow you to hone the upper part of the housing in the downward motion whiles in the
upward motion you would hone the lower housing. We'll see if it can be done that way.
